Position Summary

Serves as legal counsel to represent the interest of the client, Securian Financial Group, Inc. and its affiliates, under the overall direction of the General Counsel.  The associate in the Counsel position will play a key role in providing legal advice as a litigator and legal advisor focusing primarily on group and individual life insurance claims administration, litigation and related issues, while balancing business-oriented goals with legal risk.  Represents Securian to both internal and external customers. In addition, this position will also include developing company policy and providing legal advice on a variety of legal and regulatory issues related to insurance and other enterprise issues as directed.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage litigation with a focus on claim litigation.  This includes hiring outside counsel, collaborating with outside counsel on strategy, educating outside counsel on company practices and products, acting as the liaison between outside counsel and company associates, drafting pleadings, research, negotiating settlements and expense management.

  • Review, analyze and provide legal advice on claim files as well as participating in discussions and providing legal advice to individuals from the Claims, Medical and Underwriting departments.

  • Manage company beneficiary disputes and/or complaints.  This attorney will work with Claims and our paralegal team to train, advise, negotiate and manage these matters.

  • Manage documents and electronic information, e-discovery and legal holds.  This position will manage litigation and assist in preventative efforts related to privacy and client data.

  • Identifying potential legal or regulatory issues, especially as they relate to litigation, which may impact the organization’s business strategy, products, or business conduct and providing proactive legal advice accordingly

  • Developing productive relationships with industry colleagues, and participating on various enterprise and industry committees relating to insurance products



  • 5+ years of litigation experience as an attorney

  • Admitted to the practice of law in the State of Minnesota, or able to be in 6 months

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Self-starter who can act in a responsible, independent, and timely manner

  • Leadership skills and an interest in playing a leadership role in the company

  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment

  • Ability to gain credibility and develop strong working relationships

  • Good organizational skills

  • Adaptability to prioritize and handle numerous projects concurrently


Preferred qualifications:

  • Basic understanding and/or experience with life insurance and other estate planning products and related laws.

  • Basic understanding and/or experience with employment law, estates and trusts.

  • Strong working knowledge of the financial services and insurance industries, especially related to issues associated with life insurance claims and beneficiaries, administration and related regulations.

  • Experience implementing and managing ‘legal holds’ and other litigation related tasks in a corporate environment.

Physical job requirements:

 Ability to work at least 40 hours per week

Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for approximately 4-8 hours per day

Ability to utilize telephone for approximately 1-4 hours per day
