The Paralegal provides guidance and assistance to physicians, allied health staff, attorneys and other parties, internally and externally, with respect to legal matters affecting Mayo Clinic charitable activities and fundraising. The Paralegal is responsible for managing a large and diversified workload in support of attorneys and clients that requires strong decision-making capabilities, a high level of independent judgment and a good understanding of the organization and its business needs. Under general direction, the Paralegal completes work at an advanced level with most work requiring limited attorney revision. Duties include review of probate, estate/trust and tax matters and related court documents, correspondence from attorneys, advisors and benefactors, as well as historical information in the Development database related to vested financial interest. Additional duties include preparing agreements such as, charitable gift annuity contracts and calculations, gift

agreements and deeds, drafting letters to attorneys, trustees, estate contacts and benefactors; completing documents, filings and forms as needed; investigating facts, and inquiring about discrepancies in accountings. The Paralegal will also review charitable solicitation and gift annuity registrations, assist in managing disputes and real estate transactions, facilitate and present on relevant subject matters to internal and external audiences, conduct legal research and perform other duties as needed. The Paralegal may maintain databases, automate work tasks, generate reports and address inquiries from the managing attorney, external contacts, and internal clients. The Paralegal will support the Department of Development and engage in relationship-building initiatives and benefactor stewardship, such as coordinating and hosting in-person meetings and or tours with benefactors, estate representatives, and their advisors. The Paralegal will operate under the guidance of the

managing attorney, executive director and legal specialist. The individual hired into this role will support our Department of Development.

This position is primarily remote but must live within driving distance from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota campus with the flexibility to work on-site intermittently in accordance with business needs.

The Paralegal position requires:

•    Bachelor’s degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal educational program with 3 years relevant legal experience; or

•    Bachelor’s degree and a paralegal certificate from an ABA certified program with 3 years relevant legal experience; or

•    Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant legal experience; or  

•    a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree.

 

 

Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of laws, rules and regulations, and its processes. Possess strong problem-solving abilities, work collaboratively with legal staff, patients, consultants, allied health staff, and leadership. Proficiency in the English language, along with excellent writing and communication skills, is essential. Demonstrate exceptional organizational, and interpersonal relationship skills. Ingenuity, creativity, and self-motivation are needed to perform this job. Exhibit significant independent judgment with minimal direction and oversight, as well as excellent decision-making capabilities. Ability to self-direct, work independently, and manage multiple priorities is required in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to compose legal documents and demonstrate persuasion and negotiation skills. Exhibit competence in various technologies relevant to the role. Working knowledge of business, employment, health law and litigation practice areas is

preferred.
