Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience

Assistant Attorney (Salary range is $42.50 - $60.94)

Graduation from an accredited college of law and licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota or will be licensable within six (6) months of employment.

Associate Attorney (Salary range is $42.50 - $70.95)

Graduation from and accredited college of law, licensed to practice law in the state of Minnesota and three (3) years of experience in relevant private practice, relevant public-sector practice, or a combination thereof.

Senior Attorney (Salary range is $48.05 - $80.25)

Graduation from and accredited college of law, licensed to practice law in the state of Minnesota and six (6) years of experience in relevant private practice, relevant public-sector practice, or a combination thereof.

Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Nature of Work

Under direct and regular supervision, performs routine and complex professional legal work in the County Attorney’s office. Work involves the preparation and presentation of cases brought in District Court and the preparation of related briefs, findings, and legal documents. Work performed will be done at the direction and under supervision of the First Assistant County Attorney. Work will include real estate tax appeals, Minnesota Government Data Practices Act matters, and other civil municipal work as assigned.

Examples of Work

  • Prepares and presents civil cases in District Court and administrative hearings. Determines appropriate course of action and drafts the appropriate pleadings, petitions, and/or motions. Conducts discovery pursuant to the rules of Minnesota civil procedure. Prepares and examines witnesses.
  • Provides legal advice and direction to County officials and County departments regarding legal options and/or course of action. Works closely with County clients to achieve desired results.
  • Performs legal research and writing. Prepares correspondence, memorandums, and reports. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of civil law and civil procedure.
  • Knowledge of the duties, powers, limitations, and authority of the County Attorney.
  • Knowledge of trial procedures and the rules of evidence.
  • Skill in conducting basic legal research.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology.
  • Skill in the use of negotiation techniques.
  • Ability to train and mentor others.
  • Ability to communicate effective both verbally and in writing, including presenting to a variety of groups.
  • Ability to interview witnesses in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Ability to analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence and precedents to legal problems.
  • Ability to present legal arguments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and respectful professional working relationships with others.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize workload.
